The Bench History

The Old English word for ‘long seat’ is benc or bench. The humble bench has been associated with the judiciary since the reign of Edward I (1272 – 1307) and has also given its name to the word ‘benchmark,’ originally a place on which to stand a measuring staff for surveying and now widely used to mean a reference point for any comparative purpose.
