A Brief History of Furniture Styles in the UK, 1990's to 2010's

If you're a student in the UK, chances are you've had to move around a fair bit. And if you've had to move around a fair bit, chances are you've had to buy (or at least assemble) a lot of furniture. But have you ever stopped to think about the furniture styles that have been popular over the years? Here's a brief history of furniture styles in the UK, from the 1990's through to 2020's.

The 1990's: Minimalism is In

The 1990's were all about minimalism. This was the era of Ikea and Habitat, when clean lines and simple designs were all the rage. If you had a lot of stuff, it was probably hidden away in storage somewhere. The only things on display were a few choice items that reflected your personality.

The 2000's: Eclectic is Cool

The 2000's were all about being different. If everyone else had minimalism, you wanted maximalism. If everyone else had traditional furniture, you wanted contemporary. And if everyone else had straight lines, you wanted curves. The only rule was that there were no rules.

The 2010's: Comfort is Key

After a decade of being on trend, people were starting to get tired of constantly having to buy new furniture every time a new style came into fashion. So instead, they started opting for comfort over style. Sofas with lots of cushions and oversized armchairs became popular, as did TV beds and bean bags. And instead of buying new furniture every few years, people started investing in pieces that would last them a lifetime.

Conclusion

And that brings us up to date! These days, there's no one dominant style when it comes to furniture. Instead, people are mix-and-matching different styles to create their own unique look. So whatever your style, there's sure to be something out there that suits you!
