The earliest reference to a dressing table appears in the 17th Century, but these dressing tables were designed to hold a basin for washing, a bit like a wash stand, or a candle as a reading light, like a bedside table.
It was not until the 18th Century that the style of dressing table that would be recognisable today came into being.
